Note: Shafan Zajak is the character made by Diana, the winner of the 100th post giveaway. Thank you everyone who entered and liked the Facebook page.
Shafan Zajak is your classic case of judging a book by the cover. While she was mostly invisible to the students of A.L. High, the ones who do notice her think of her as a nerd. With her unruly brown hair, braces and glasses she looked like the picture of your average nerd.
But Shafan didn’t hang out with the nerds, she didn’t really hang out with anyone. Behind her cover she was very complex girl, with a troubling past. She used to live in Port Charlotte, Florida until the Hurricane Charley destroyed her families home. And her mom.
The day the hurricane hit Shafan was worried about her cat, who they couldn’t get into the carrier to come with them. She pestered her mom about it until her mom went back to try to rescue the cat, but her mom got into a car accident on the way there and died. Shafan never saw her mom, or her cat, again.
Her mom was her role model, she was so perfect and beautiful and never made mistakes. she missed her dearly and always blamed herself for whining about the cat. If only she hadn’t...
She moved to Broad Meadows in 2004 and even though she wasn’t new anymore she hadn’t made any friends and many people assumed she was new. She spent her time focusing on family and school, no time for friends.
Shafan enjoyed writing poetry, bad poetry, but she loved it anyway. English was her least favorite class because they always criticised her poetry.
Shafan had nice clothes, but she wasn’t very good at wearing them. Something was always in need of ironing, or her shirt was untucked, plus she had a habit of wearing mismatched socks.
Shafan was happily invisible, she was never bullied but she didn't have a ton of friends either. Not that she wanted to be popular, the Populars were so snobby. She didn’t like to spend her time with snobby people.
Shafan had some interesting speech habits. When she was tired, she was “wrecked.” When she is mad she’s “ticked off.” And if you ask her what’s up she’ll say, “just moseying around.”
She’s dreadfully clumsy, falling or dropping things at least twice a day. It’s terribly hard for her to find her way through the crowded hallways between classes, she bumps into at least three people every time. It’s quite a shock she hasn’t made a reputation for it.
Shafan had a loud laugh, that some people liked and other people didn’t. When around friends Shafan was upbeat and happy, around strangers she was quiet and reserved. A bit of a contrast.
Shafan lived in a small ranch style home, with two bedrooms, one full bath and a half bath between the den and the living room. There was a kitchen, a dining room, living room, den, finished basement and attic. The living room was formal, with sofa and a piano, while the den is more comfortable and has a TV.
The den is her favorite place in the house, she likes to sit there and read or watch TV while waiting for her dad to come home, or with her dad.
Her bedroom was always messy, with clothes on the floor, her bed not made. Her bedside table was piled high with books and her desk was almost hidden with her notebooks full of poems.
In the morning Shafan woke up to make breakfast for her and her dad, which she has done since her mother died, and prepare lunches. Then she and her dad leave for the day, her to school him to his job.
When she comes home the house is always empty, she does her homework and makes dinner. Then her dad comes home, they eat and watch tv together. They watch the same shows weekly.
Shafan is smart, she gets straight as and she thinks she’s a shoo in for Valedictorian, if that AeGuk guy doesn’t get it. She can speak some hebrew and french, and dreams of someday living in Paris. Maybe.
Her only goals in life are to have fun and be good. Simple rules to live by.
While Shafan wasn’t exactly not confident she wasn’t a big fan of her unruly hair and gap in her teeth. Hence the braces.
She has a terribly geeky sense of humour that only some people understand. She fears storms, due to the hurricane that ripped apart her life. Her biggest accomplishment was getting straight As in every quarter since freshman year.
Shafan’s favorite color is deco peach, although it is very close to her skin tone. She loves to wear her dad’s old sweaters, they’re just so comfortable.
Her go to drink is sweet iced tea, there is always a pitcher of it in the fridge. Her favorite treat is white chocolate, if she could she would eat it all day. But that’s not healthy. Her favorite food is her grandmother’s matzoh ball soup.
She doesn’t listen to modern music much, just another thing to separate her from her classmates. When they’re talking about the latest Justin Bieber album she’s listening to Barry Manilow.
Rachel Barry was glee is probably her biggest star crush, she think’s she’s adorable. She thinks Sandra Bernhard is inspiring.
She likes to read the classics, or sci fi and fantasy. Chick lits just aren’t for her.
Her name means Rabbit is Hebrew because she was born on Easter Sunday, though she is Jewish, but her mom wasn’t really religious at all.
She loves long baths, sleeping in and gummy bears. You can always find a bag of gummy bears somewhere in her room.
Her mode of transportation is an old 1995 Mercury Tracer that her dad is always fixing for her. Even though it’s old and always broken Shafan loves it dearly.
She always wears her mom’s engagement ring around her neck, because it’s her mom’s and because the diamond is her birthstone.
Shafan has morals and she sticks to them. No cheating, especially since an incident when her friend convinced her to let her cheat but when they got caught blamed it on her. No drugs and alcohol, that’s just obvious.
She isn’t very well mannered, but she tries her best to be polite always. She’s very structured, not big on spontaneity. She always chooses the logical way, thinking before she leaps.
Shafan is a big crier, she almost cries at everything. Loss, pain, stress, guilt, being wrong, criticism, hate, humiliation, anxiety. She cries.
She finds friendship and other relationships hard, never knowing how to deal with them. She’s most comfortable around girls and she isn’t a big fan of boys.
She thinks she might want to be a teacher, like her mom, but her grandparents want her to become doctor. Oh, the tough choices of life.
Shafan’s biggest, darkest, deepest secret is that she likes girls. She’s never told anyone, might never tell anyone. She’s never dated anyone before, and doesn't think she’s quite ready for it even though she is a senior in high school.
Her ideal type is a pretty girl with a nice smile, and someone who sings well. Again she’ll never admit it to anyone.
Every Saturday she and her dad go to the temple for church. Since there is no Jewish church in Broad Meadows they have to wake up early and drive to the next town.
Shafan herself didn’t put much into Judaism. She struggled with the concept of god after her mom died.
When she was younger she was very spoiled, because her parents loved her so much. And she loved it. Now she tries to never ask for anything, and even though her dad still dotes on her she doesn’t take advantage of it.
She never really realised how whiny she had been before, until her mom died and everything. She she tries to treat her dad with complete and utter respect all the time.
And that is Shafan Zajak. See? Very complex once you get to know her.
