Blue, Gold, and Tacky

(HQ)

Lexi sat on a bench in the dressing room of some prom dress store, she absentmindedly scrolled through her twitter feed on her phone waiting for Honey to announce that she was done dressing and ready to show Lexi the dress. This was dress number 9 and Lexi was getting tired of watching her cousin try on sparkly dress after sparkly dress. Each one of the dresses so far had shared one common factor, an obnoxiously bright color. The first one was fuschia, the hot pink, some turquoise, chartreuse, etc etc.
“I am ready!” Honey called.
“Okay, come on out,” Lexi said, quickly turning off her phone and directing her attention the the dressing room door that Honey stood behind.
“Voila!” Honey announced as she pushed open the door with flourish. This dress was bright blue, a shade Lexi didn’t quite know the name of. Not quite royal, but not sky or turquoise either. Kind of a mix of all three. It was short and had A line skirt made of a satiny material and the top was covered in little iridescent gems.
It was beautiful. But so were a couple of the one’s before it.
“What do you think?” Honey asked, stepping over to the mirror and spinning a couple of times.
“Nice,” Lexi said. “Bright.”
“Right?” Honey nodded, staring at herself intently in the mirror, “but I think I want gold. Somewhere.”
Lexi nodded, thinking back to a few dresses ago, one that was heavily peacock inspired.
“What about the peacock dress?” Lexi asked.
“Tacky,” Honey said, wrinkling her nose a bit, “but what about prom isn’t?”
Lexi nodded.
“This is so hard,” Honey complained, “such a big decision, how am I possibly supposed to choose?”
”Right?” Lexi agreed, “but please choose soon, I’m starving.”
Honey sighed, “Fine, one last dress.”
Lexi sighed and went back to her phone as Honey stepped back into the dressing room. And about fifteen minutes later Honey announced she was ready again and Lexi put her phone away, again.
“Gold!” Honey said as she opened the door for the, hopefully, last time. This dress was blue, a more distinct royal blue this time, with gold silky flowers all over it.
“Get this one,” Lexi said, “so far what I’ve heard you say is, blue, gold, and tacky. Here it is!”
Honey nodded “you think so?”
“Yes,” Lexi nodded, “and not just because I’m afraid you could take another hour trying to decided and I would die of starvation, it really is you.”
Honey went over to the mirror and gazed at the dress adoringly, “I think I agree with you.”
“Finally,” Lexi muttered.
“It’s gorgeous!” Honey said, practically bouncing back over to the changing room to get back into her normal clothes, “Let’s go to that weird asian place after this!”
“The one with the dead fish hanging all over the walls?” Lexi asked.
“Yes, that one!”
